Mature Geek
I was a geek long before "GEEK" became a job description. I was born
to be a geek. I've always had a fascination for all things
electronic. As a kid in the 1970's, I hung out at my local Radio
Shack instead of the arcade. I was there the very day when the store
manger unpacked and setup the first TRS-80 computer back in 1977. It
was love at first-sight!
In 1981, in high school, I helped build a Sinclair ZX81 kit computer
in electronics class. I got my first computer, a Commodore 64 with
color monitor and a floppy drive, in 1983. My first (non-family
business) part-time job was working on a Burroughs A/R - A/P -
Payroll system for a real estate developer.
Of course I studied computers In college. But after a while I became
concerned that I was learning on outdated computers like a gigantic
DEC VAX-11/780 that took up an entire 50x30 foot room.
The PC-Age had arrived and I wanted in on it!
In the late 1980's I got my chance. I teamed up with an old high
school friend and others to create a pioneering online real estate
information service. This was accomplished by taking data from
old 9-track tapes and converting it form EBCDIC to ASCII. I was in Geek Heaven.
I built and
programmed multi-user online database systems using DOS based Intel
386 and 486 EISA bus PCs running eSoft TBBS / TDBS software
controlling Digiboard mulit-port serial cards connected to racks of
2400 baud US Robotics modems plugged into banks of roll-over
telephone lines. This was a major accomplishment at a point in time
when almost all this type of business was hosted on large and
expensive mainframes and minicomputers like the IBM AS/400. Keep in mind this was
also at time when most people hadn't even heard of a modem yet.
So what's all this geek-speak got do to with you? -
It's impossible to grow a successful online service unless it STAYS
ONLINE. My philosophy was, and always will be, to put in the effort
required to make things work reliably. In addition, an essential
part of selling this online service was getting it to work on
end-user's computers. That meant doing whatever it took to get
end-user's computers functioning correctly. For over a decade I
have successfully trouble-shot and repaired hundreds upon hundreds of
computers.
For the last twelve years, I've been dedicated to helping folks
setup, protect, repair, and get the most out of their computers, laptops,
networks, applications, and data. I would genuinely appreciate the
opportunity to earn your business.
